I couldn’t have been more disappointed, as I like Coelho most of the time. The Witch of Portobello was my first introduction to Paulo Coelho and I thought since The Alchemist seemed so highly regarded that it was going to be a good read.

Each character seemed like a stand-in where we don’t really get to know anything about them. His portrayal of women and women’s sense of spirituality seemed very male to me and almost patronizing.
I felt that all the characters had the same tone of voice and theory of thinking to the point where I was confused as to who was speaking. Man, I’ve never been soo damn wrong in my life. Wrong original publication date. Not a great start to a new year of reading, but at least there’s no where to go but up. Here, the author mentions that this might be due to the fact that she was abandoned herself and wants to give all that love she could to her child which she didn’t receive from her birth mother.

Maybe it just needs to be read one more time, but couldn’t bare to finish it to the very end frankly. The work also expounds a selection of philosophies, which bear a certain degree of similarity to Coelho’s teachings from previous novels and carry the characteristic imprint of his own ideas, as well as a citation regarding the ephemeral nature of desires, which appears in most of Coelho’s novels.
